The Pink Beanie

May 27, 2012

A week can make a big difference in life and also football. Last week my sister Monique, good friend Beti and I ventured off to Geelong vs. Collingwood for some good quality football. I was proud of the boys’ domination in the final quarter…if only it had started earlier.

I can’t remember if I have spoken about my dislike of Collingwood supports before, but here goes. They are a  very unique group in the strangest sense of the word. I have not experienced the full force of their wrath since 2010  (oh that was the last time Geelong lost to them funnily enough). Last week’s game was no exception as my friends and I had to put up with a whole group of them in front of us. One kind gentleman proceeded to say when he noticed my pink beanie: “AW I told you they were all a bunch of poofters.” I responded with: “How dare you insult one of the best clubs in the AFL.” It would take a narrow minded excuse for a human being   not to realize that just because a club supports its female fans with pink coloured beanies it does not mean that they are a bunch of poofs!

But an old friend and North Melbourne supporter  this week commented on how well the pink beanie suited me. I have no doubt that my whole face would have lit up when he said it. God (Gary Ablett Senior) could I please see more of this boy. He’s a good sort even if we worshiped Wayne Carey as a child. So it is with great pleasure that I can say my fortunes and Geelong’s were looking up this week.

Yesterday at The Cattery

Reblogged from Blue and White Hoop Mania:

We got the early train up to Geelong in record timing. Fortunately, whilst saying goodbye to Melbourne for the day we were also saying goodbye to the rain! Thank goodness for that  because it was cold enough already.

I stumbled upon old Wayne in the social club. I had not spoken to the man since last year when I was going through a should I stay or should I go dilemma (and no I’m not talking about whether I should switch teams .

Yesterday at The Cattery

We got the early train up to Geelong in record timing. Fortunately, whilst saying goodbye to Melbourne for the day we were also saying goodbye to the rain! Thank goodness for that  because it was cold enough already.

I stumbled upon old Wayne in the social club. I had not spoken to the man since last year when I was going through a should I stay or should I go dilemma (and no I’m not talking about whether I should switch teams ;) .  He was certain I would provide him with some chips. It is funny how he finds everything hysterically funny after only a few drinks. Wayne was truly what makes the social club a unique place to be.

Apart from the social club personalities displaying their best, yesterday let the standby players show us what they’re made of. I was particularly impressed with Pods, Enright and Corey. The young guns are really hitting their stride. Motlop continues to provide the much-needed run that the team needs. Brown and Stringer are boy wonders who keep dominating the opposition.

Dear Chris Scott, please keep giving Brown games. What does he have to do? Kick 12 goals in the VFL?

Horror Week!

April 21, 2012

Last week Mon and I went to the game at Etihad. It was not what I was expecting to see at all. I really thought the Cats would cruise home in emphatic fashion.

What we were treated to was a great display of football prowess from…the Kkangaroos! I know it’s hard to believe, but they were faster and much better at winning the contested ball.

The clincher came at the end of the night when a tram inspector caught us in full Geelong gear. ‘If you guys don’t win next week at home against Richmond, it’s all over.” As a Carlton supporter he has not idea what he is talking about.

Nothing Like A Hawk!

April 10, 2012

You know it’s going to be a good week when Joel Selwood gets on the front page. Who would have thought he would not be making an appearance at the Logies with his partner because of a football game? Anyone would think he was a premiership captain ;) !

Yes, it does seem that this Selwood fellow is taking the football business seriously. He bravely fought on to lead the cats to victory yesterday against Hawthorn. A knock to the head just can’t stop the Selwood.

Other notable mentions must go to the Pods, Tom Hawkins and Jimmy. Hawkins has really grown in confidence since his stunning finals series last year. He just gives everything a red hot go. I’m sure that the team will rely on Hawkins marking presence throughout the year.

Go cats!

The First Nab Cup Game

February 26, 2012

Twitter dubbed these three games as pee wee worthy and they weren’t wrong. Everybody one on Friday night with St Kilda, Geelong and Sydney all enjoying the spoils.

The standouts for me were Jordan Schroder and Steven Motlop. Schroder has great goal sense that is such a rare quality in this day and age. Motlop looked confident at such an early part of the year.

The 2011 Bear

I really thought I had missed out on something so good. All that changed when I went to Geelong’s first training session and got my hands on a limited edition premiership bear. Image

Welcome 2012

January 21, 2012

I could not think of a better subject to start the year off in my blog. Yesterday, I went to the Cats first open training session for the year.

The day started at the true fanatics time of 6.30 am. Normally this really would not have been so painful. I just had an interview with an ESL summer school in England the night before and had not been up so early in two months.  My body ached with exhaustion the next morning.

A tired feeling was completely worth it when I got to see the lovely K Fred again and meet Bambi and Arj that I had been chatting to on Twitter. Mon and I managed to get a bucket load of autographs after the training session. The highlight was getting a pic with the new captain of Geelong, Mr Joel Selwood ( even if the girl from Griffith is covering him).

So I think we’re in for a good year to come if this start is anything to go by. My aims are to attend all the Victorian games, and have a blast at a Sydney one.

Selwood :) good times
